Ginger, Lime + Five-Spice Cocktail [featuring Hangar1 Vodka]

I've been in a "fruit plus herb" rut lately. I love that combination (grapefruit and thyme, cherry and sage, etc), and you'll likely be seeing much more of it on the blog, but it was starting to feel like those were the only flavor pairings I could think of. When I was given the chance to come up with a cocktail recipe using Hangar 1 Straight Vodka, I promised myself I'd do something other than my go-to fruit and herb combo.

To help me get out of my creative slump, the hubs, my brother and my sister-in-law kindly agreed to brainstorm and taste-test with me (such a huge sacrifice, I know). My husband pulled out nearly every spice from the spice cabinet and somehow the challenge was extended to create a cocktail using Chinese five-spice powder.

You guys...this may be one of my favorite cocktail recipes I've ever made (OK, I can't take full credit - it was a joint family effort.) It starts with smooth, Hangar 1 Straight Vodka that has slight floral and tropical fruit notes. Muddled limes make it perfectly refreshing, and ginger and Chinese five-spice powder add a creative kick.

This may be the beginning of a "fruit plus spice" obsession...

Ginger, Lime + Five-Spice Cocktail
Yields 1 cocktail

Cocktail
5 lime wedges
1 Tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 ounce Ginger + Five-Spice Simple Syrup
2 ounces Hangar 1 Straight Vodka
Ice

In a cocktail shaker, muddle four lime wedges with the minced fresh ginger. Add the simple syrup, vodka and ice, and then shake well. Strain and pour into a glass filled with ice. Serve with a lime wedge.

Ginger + Five-Spice Simple Syrup
1 Tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

Add all ingredients to a small saucepan on medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring often. Turn heat to low and simmer an additional 5-7 minutes, continuing to stir frequently. Remove from heat.

Strain out the solids and allow the syrup to cool before using. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 weeks.
