Soothing Grapefruit, Ginger + Honey Tonic

This recipe wasn't originally on my blog post schedule, but thanks to a lingering cold, Grapefruit, Ginger + Honey Tonic has found a spot on the docket. I've been sipping variations of this drink almost every night for the last few days, and it's brought welcomed relief to my achy body.

I originally made this lemon version from The Kitchn, but I eventually ran out of lemons and hardly wanted to schlep myself to the store. Fortunately, my fridge has been pretty stocked with other citrus, so I thought I'd try grapefruit. (Also, I had lots of grapefruit that desperately needed to be used up ASAP!) Sooooo good! The bright, tart grapefruit is a welcomed pick-me-up, the honey feels soothing on the throat and ginger helps calm the stomach. Add a shot of bourbon for a warming kick and relief from congestion.

It almost makes being sick worth it. Then again, there's no need to wait until you're under the weather to enjoy it!

Grapefruit, Ginger + Honey Tonic
Adapted from The Kitchn
Yields 1 serving

3/4 cup water
Juice of 1/2 a grapefruit
1 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
2 teaspoons honey (plus more to taste)
1 ounce bourbon (optional)

Add the water, grapefruit juice, ginger and honey to a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Strain into a mug.

Add bourbon and additional honey as desired. Sip slowly, and get better soon!
